Which changed to a separate client, because they couldn't deal with running on a platform that changed the goal posts every other update. See the game Atlas, a browser based MOBA-alike. The java client still works though, creating a web client, that would have to deal with the vagaries of browser updates and changes. KGS does develop their client, the fact that it is still what it is, is testament to the lack of money to develop it. It is also an example of why that doesn't work, technology has moved on, even if KGS created a new client using a different technology, it would need to be updated and developed continuously, sooner or later it will be another outdated client. To be honest KGS's client is an example of KGS trying to be forward thinking and create a client that would be 'written once, and run anywhere'. These are examples of people trying to create new things, you would need to do what they are doing better, and compete with them doing it.

Financially viable? Probably not, early access is full of neat ideas that never make it. There are people creating new clients today, most are doing it on their own backs.

Simply put, no, there is no market, and no money, for the time and effort to create a really nice and sleek client, the returns would not justify it financially. But it's so goddamn hard to evaluate whether I can expect any financial returns on this work.

I'm a software dev and entrepreneur, and I'd love to find resources to invest in such a project. What about the largest eastern market? Would it be interested at all? But how off-putting is this situation for the new players? How likely are they to choose something like TCG instead? And not because they don't want to think, but because Hearthstone simply looks much more attractive and addictive?Īnd if such a server appeared, how would the oldschool community react? Would achievements and other flashy features just annoy you? I love the game, so I can easily tolerate this. I'm aware that quite a lot of this features are present on KGS, but, with all respect to KGS, the way they are implemented makes me cry in 2016. Basically, a modern hub for all things go, wrapped in looks and design that captures attention and encourages you to play and study more. A marketplace for stones/goban skins? A cluster hosting most powerful bots, making moves in seconds?Ī proper platform with video lectures, a platform for tutors to work on conveniently, like freelancers do on modern remote work platforms. Daily challenges (read go problems), achievements and newbie-friendly guides. Multiple types of games, matchmaking and multiple ladders.

I'm talking not about putting orcs all over goban, but about a sleek client in the first place. Think of a modern digital TCG like Hearthstone. I love go, and I especially love KGS, it's a great server with an amazing unique community.
